Bonavita Macaroni & White Cheddar

My take on BONAVITA MACARONI & WHITE CHEDDAR:

It ROCKS!  Enough said!  You've gotta try it!  My son likes it better than Kraft!  They have one similar to Kraft with the orange cheddar cheese, but guess what, it's actually made with real cheese, imagine that!  We haven't tried the orange cheddar one yet, but I am confident it will be delicious, just like the white cheddar.  I love that it's all natural and GMO free!  I feel good about feeding it to my son, unlike the times when I have made Kraft for him.  My opinion, let's start feeding our kids REAL food!

Happy comfort food eating!

Breton Herb and Garlic Crackers

My take on BRETON HERB AND GARLIC CRACKERS:

These crackers are amazing!  They are great for snacking all by themselves or with a nice slice of your favorite cheese on them!  My kids love them too!  They have different flavors, but I like this one the best.  These are as close to a gluten cracker as I have tasted yet!

Happy Snacking!

King Arthur Pancake Mix

My take on KING ARTHUR PANCAKE MIX:

Since going gluten-free about 2 1/2 years ago, I tried many different pancake mixes, but I had never tried King Arthur's.  Once I found Pamela's, I stopped trying other mixes.  It's delicious, but it's made with almond flour, which I found out I cannot have anymore.  I had actually bought a box of King Arthur mix, but hadn't tried it yet, so I got it out yesterday and gave it a try.  UNBELIEVABLE!!!  It is SO incredible!!  You would NEVER in a million years think these pancakes are gluten free!  They are thick, fluffy and super delicious!!  I topped mine with blueberries and real maple syrup and they were awesome!  If you are searching for a good pancake mix - look no further!  This one is AWESOME!!

Happy Flipping!

King Arthur Chocolate Cake Mix

My take on KING ARTHUR CHOCOLATE CAKE MIX:

I actually have a funny story to go along with this post!  We had a big luncheon at my boy's school and one of the ladies said she was going to bring gluten-free chocolate cupcakes.  They looked delicious and near the end of the luncheon, there were a few leftover, so I decided to try one.  I took one bite and honestly, I hadn't tasted anything that delicious since going gluten free two and a half years ago!  It was INCREDIBLE!!!  I would say even better than Betty Crocker or Duncan Hines, seriously!  In fact, it was so good that I started to think "There is NO WAY these are gluten free!"  So after taking a couple more bites, I threw the rest away, feeling quite certain that I would be throwing up within a couple of hours!

Well, I got home and wasn't feeling sick, so I e-mailed the girl who brought them and sure enough, they were gluten free!  It was King Arthur Chocolate Cake Mix!!!  If you haven't tried it - it will be your go to cake mix - FOR SURE!  I didn't notice any other flavors, but I'm sure they make a  yellow mix and I'm sure it's just as good!

I will also be posting about their pancake mix!  Again, you'd never know it was gluten free!  I was using Pamela's pancake mix, which I love, but since finding out that I have nut allergies, I cannot eat it anymore since it is made primarily with almond flour.  So we are switching to the King Arthur brand and it is WAY better anyway!!  Try it - I know you'll agree!

Happy chocolate cake baking!

Gluten Free Dunkin' Donuts Are Here!

Written by Leslie Morris of Triumph Dining

Dunkin’ Donuts fans unite – the company is readying to sell gluten-free cinnamon-sugar doughnuts and blueberry muffins in stores nationwide this year, positioning itself as the first in the fast food industry to offer gluten-free pastries.
The company was pleased with the results of its pilot in Massachusetts locations earlier this year and the gluten-free items are now available in the Hartford, Connecticut area.
Note that the new menu items are not necessarily lower in calories than other baked goods sold by Canton, Massachusetts-based Dunkin’ Brands. The wheat-free doughnut has 320 calories, while its glazed doughnut has 260 calories. The gluten-free blueberry muffin has 400 calories versus 460 for the standard version and 410 for a reduced-fat one. So, though the tasty eats will be better alternatives for those who are gluten intolerant, they will not necessarily be better for you. They are still doughnuts, after all.
The suggested prices are $1.89 for Dunkin’s gluten-free doughnuts and $2.39 for muffins. The Dunkin’ chain has more than 7,300 U.S. shops.

Afterglow Cosmetics Product Review by Triumph Dining

Written by Laura Mertens

When you’re on a strict gluten-free diet, it’s not only food and drink that you have to watch out for. Anything which goes in you mouth, such as toothpaste, mouthwash and lip products, must also be checked for gluten.

Many lip-sticks contain wheat-based oils and proteins so watch out! You don’t want to be strictly gluten-free, just to be keep poisoning yourself with a little bit of lipstick every day. There are a few company on the market which offer gluten-free cosmetics but Afterglow Cosmetics are the first line of cosmetics to be certified gluten-free by the Gluten-Free Certification Organization (GFCO).

CEO and Founder, Kristin Adams, set out to develop a safe line of gluten-free cosmetics since the company began in 2004. Both her mother and sister have celiac disease, so she understands cross contamination and the serious consequences when celiacs consume even the tinniest amount of gluten.

As well as being completely gluten-free, Afterglow Cosmetics are also soy free, mercury free, paraben free, GMO free, synthetic dye free, fragrance free, carmine free and petrochemical free. They are also certified cruelty free by Leaping Free. That’s a lot of free!

NOTE:

I checked this website out and the products are definitely pricey!  $24.00 for a lipstick or mascara! Speaking as someone with Celiac disease, I do think it is important to use gluten-free cosmetics, but I think you can still use some of the products from Walgreens or Target - you may just have to call the company to ask about gluten.  Remember, everything you put on your skin goes into your bloodstream!  If money isn't an issue and you want to be sure that cross-contamination isn't an issue, Afterglow might be the right choice for you!

Shop wisely!

Pillsbury and Celiacs Welcome Three New Gluten-Free Products to Market

Written by Leslie Morris of Triumph Dining

Thank you Pillsbury! Your friends at Triumph Dining were thrilled to read your recent press release on your new offerings: pie and pastry crust, chocolate chip cookie dough, and thin crust pizza dough.

General Mills, who owns Pillsbury, has long been a friend of the gluten-free community. Its associated companies now offer more than 300 gluten-free products. Chex Cereal was its first mainstream product followed by Betty Crocker baking mixes. Today there are seven varieties of gluten-free Chex cereal.

The Pillsbury team developed at least a dozen different formulas to test. Wheat flour was eliminated. The cookie dough contains rice flour. The pie crusts have rice and sorghum flour. The thin pizza crust contains tapioca starch, rice, millet and sorghum flour.

In the summer of 2012, about 20 consumers handled the dough, tasted and critiqued it. At that time the company also created a 35-member Gluten-Free Advisory Board. Said Jill Haspert, associate marketing manager at Pillsbury, “It was eye opening to listen to gluten-free consumers, who told us they couldn’t find products their kids would eat. We found that moms with gluten-free kids were cooking two meals at ho me. One consumer even told us that a gluten-free cookie has to pass the ‘dunk-able’ test, meaning it wouldn’t crumble when her kids dunked it in milk.”

We’ll be looking for these new products in our local grocery store pronto.

Pamela's Chocolate Chunk Cookie Mix

My take on PAMELA'S CHOCOLATE CHUNK COOKIE MIX:

All of the Pamela's products that I have tried have been AWESOME!!  Two of my favorites are the pancake mix, which is gluten-free, but not dairy-free and the cornbread mix, which is also gluten-free and at the moment, I can't remember if it's dairy-free or not.  They are incredible!

So the other day I tried this cookie mix.  It was also delicious!  The cookies are a tad darker in color than a regular chocolate chip cookie because they have a little cocoa powder in the mix.  They are gluten-free and dairy-free and super yummy.  My 5 year old son, Will, said that they were the best cookies I've ever made!

On the package, it says to flatten the cookies a bit before baking them.  It also says that the cookies will spread when you bake them.  Well, I did flatten them a bit, but I don't think they spread, but that was actually good, because they were sort of "cakey" and thick, which is a nice change from the flat, crunchy chocolate chip cookie.

Oh - and the dough is delicious too.  That is always one of my favorite things about making chocolate chip cookies - THE DOUGH!!

So, here's another Pamela's product that I can highly recommend.  The only negative thing I can say about them is that one bag only makes about 14 cookies! (Or maybe I just ate too much of the dough!)

Happy Baking!

Pamela's Biscuit & Scone Mix

My take on PAMELA'S BISCUIT & SCONE MIX:

Tried making the Country Biscuit recipe on the bag and they turned out great.  They'd better be good, seeing that you add 12 tablespoons of butter!!  They are gluten and dairy-free.  I am still searching for an AWESOME biscuit recipe or mix.  This one is definitely good, but it's doesn't meet my expectations for the perfect biscuit.  I will probably use this mix for now, until I find a good recipe.  To me, this mix tastes a little sweet; I could almost see it making better scones than biscuits.  My oldest son loved these biscuits though, maybe because of that sweetness?  So, overall, I would recommend this mix.  Try it, you will probably like it.  I think I am picky when it comes to biscuits.  ; )

Happy Biscuit Making!

Wellaby's Gluten-Free Pita Chips

My take on WELLABY'S PITA CHIPS:

I tried the Olive Oil & Sea Salt flavor and they were good.  Not something I would necessarily be overly excited about eating by themselves.  Not because they tasted bad; they just weren't delicious, but using them to dip into my favorite hummus or dip - perfecto!!  Very excited about this, as I was a big fan of Stacy's Pita Chips - which contain gluten - so I have had to say good-bye to those, but I will definitely use Wellaby's to satisfy my hummus/pita chip cravings!  They also have Parmesan Cheese, Parmesan & Sundried Tomato and Italian Herb flavors.  They are all gluten-free, but they do contain dairy.

Happy Crunching!

Mamma Mia! Pancake Mix

My take on MAMMA MIA! PANCAKE MIX:

We tried it this morning for the first time and I have to say we were pleasantly surprised.  It's basically made from only two flours, so I had my doubts (the best gluten-free foods tend to use at least 3 or more different flours), but it was very good!

The mix is wheat, gluten, dairy, soy, corn and yeast free!  To keep it that way, you can make the pancakes by adding sparkling juice or water and oil, however, we chose to make it using the traditional method on the bag, which calls for milk, eggs and oil.  We did use almond milk instead of regular milk.

The batter was thin - so the pancakes were thin and light, but my little guys like them that way.  I made silver dollars for them and they said it was the best mix we have tried yet!

This company also makes one of my favorite dip mixes - a garlic dip mix.  They use all natural ingredients and so far, I have liked every Mamma Mia! product I have tried!

I am still on the hunt for a delicious "from scratch" recipe, but as far as mixes go, this is the one I would recommend.  If you can have dairy, Pamela's pancake mix is my fave (it contains buttermilk)!

Happy Pancake Making!

Pamela's Sugar Cookie Mix

My take on PAMELA'S SUGAR COOKIE MIX:

Holy delicious sugar cookies Batman!  (Can you tell I am under the influence of two little boys!)  I need some cut out sugar cookies for the boy's Valentine's Day parties this week, so I decided to try this mix since I am short on time and WOW, was I pleasantly surprised!  They are super yummy!!

Best of all, they are gluten and dairy-free!

Pamela's also makes my favorite gluten-free pancake mix, although it is not dairy-free.  Their cornbread mix ROCKS too!  Pamela's seems to be a consistently good brand.

So if you need a quick sugar cookie mix (or a sugar cookie fix) - this is the one - it's awesome!!

Happy Baking!

Bob's Red Mill Pancake Mix

My take on BOB'S RED MILL PANCAKE MIX:

We are on the hunt for a yummy boxed (or bagged) pancake mix!  Pamela's was my favorite, but we have had to stop using it because it is not dairy-free!  If you can have dairy, Pamela's is definitely the one I would recommend!

So tonight we tried the Bob's Red Mill.  I tried it plain and then I also added a little cinnamon.  It was very good!  No funny taste, no after taste, very thick and hearty.  I might even make them a little on the thin side next time.  It was so thick and hearty that I could only eat one!  My little guy had his with chocolate chips and he loved it.  Drew (my oldest) said it was yummy too - he eats his in silver dollars, plain, with a light dusting of powdered sugar.  Yes, when it comes to pancakes it our house, they are made to order.  It's not that way with most other meals!

So I may be adding this product to my list of favorites, but I have a few others to try first, so keep checking back!

All-in-all, I would recommend this product.  It was very tasty and you really couldn't tell that it is gluten-free.  Oh - and it's dairy-free too!!

Happy Pancake Making!

Allie's Awesome Buckwheat Pancakes by 1-2-3 Gluten Free

My take on ALLIE'S AWESOME BUCKWHEAT PANCAKES:

Since having gone dairy free, we cannot have Pamela's pancake mix anymore, so sad!!  So I am on the hunt for another pancake mix.  I may end up making them from scratch, but for now, I want a quick box mix to rely on.

I recently bought four different pancake mixes and we are going to try them one-by-one and see which one we like the best.

So this morning, we tried Allie's Awesome Buckwheat Pancakes by 1-2-3 gluten free and....well....they were not so awesome!

I thought the mix smelled a little funny, but I liked the texture.  I kept my batter thick and they puffed up nicely and made a nice hearty pancake, however, they seem to have a very strange after taste.

My 7-year old likes pancakes with just a light dusting of powdered sugar and he was almost in tears after the first silver dollar pancake he ate.  He really didn't like the taste that it left in his mouth.  I definitely noticed it too.  It was very strong when I tried a couple of bites of his plain pancakes.  I made mine with blueberries and I put a little maple syrup on them and it masked it a little bit, but I think we will move on and see if some of the other ones are better.

This mix tastes good when you are chewing it, but the after taste is pretty strong.  To me, it wasn't horrible, but I'd prefer to have pancakes without the after taste!

My Favorite Gluten-Free / Dairy-Free Product List!

There are many GF and/or DF products out there - some are awesome, some are decent and some are just nasty!!  I will keep updating this list because I keep trying new things too, but here is a list of some of my favorite products! (I will have to finish this list over the next few days - I am a mom - so I don't have much time for blogging!)

If you have access to a Woodman's Grocery Store - it is my favorite place to shop for natural foods and GF/DF foods - they have an incredible selection and best of all - great prices!

1)  Pamela's Pancake Mix - this is NOT dairy free - it contains buttermilk, so I will no longer be using it, but if you can have dairy - go for it!  It's the BEST!!  You won't even know they are gluten free!  If you like thicker pancakes, make the batter thicker, if you like thin ones - add more water!

2)  Pamela's Cornbread Mix - lots of butter in this recipe and lots of sugar - but that is what makes it soooo delicious!!  It is gluten-free and dairy-free (except for the butter, which you add to the mix).  Yay, I can still eat this one!  I make the cornbread into muffins and freeze them in resealable plastic bags, that way I can just take out one or two whenever we want a snack!

3)  Gluten Free Sensations - Cherry Vanilla Almond Granola - just tried this today and it is AWESOME!!!  .  It's gluten-free and dairy-free and super yummy.  I love to add granola to my yogurt and this is so good, you will want to eat it by the handful!  (Oh - and Woodman's carries Coconut Milk yogurt, for you dairy-free folks like myself - I haven't tried it yet - just bought some today - so I'll let you know what I think soon!)

4)  Canyon Bakehouse Bread - many GF folks say that Udi's is the best bread, but I like Canyon Bakehouse much better!  It's about $5.75 a loaf (and they are small) at Woodman's, Udi's is similar in price, but I order CBB on-line by the case and it's a cheaper price, so with shipping, it's about the same as what I pay in the store.  We go through it like crazy, and like I said, the loaves are small, so I stock up and freeze it.  **Note - keep it in the freezer until you are ready to use it, then leave it on the counter - do NOT refrigerate it - contrary to popular belief - your bread will dry out more quickly in the fridge!

5)  Kind Bars - you have to pick and choose, because some are not dairy free, but they are all gluten free and they are delicious.  I have my favorite flavors - Almond Coconut is probably my top fav.  They are expensive - I pay about $1.25 a bar at Woodman's and I have gotten them on-line too, but if you can afford it, they are a delicious and healthy snack for you or your kiddos!  I sometimes send one to school with my 7 year old for his afternoon snack.

6)  Annie's Gluten Free Snickerdoodle Bunny Cookies - my son loves these.  They are also dairy free!

7)  Kinnikinnick KinniKritters Animal Cookies - okay, I have to admit, I am somewhat addicted to these!  They are delicious!  My little guy thinks they taste like lemon.  I think they are just light and crunchy and delicious!  They are also gluten and dairy free!

8)  Lucy's Cinnamon Thin cookies - WOW is all I can say for these!  I wouldn't recommend buying them for yourself!  They are super expensive and you WILL eat them ALL!  I was buying them for my son's lunch - but decided to make my own due to cost, but they are delicious for a special treat.  They also have oatmeal, chocolate chip and a few other flavors and they are all good!

9)  Glutino Gluten Free Crackers - Original - these are tasty little crackers, but not my favorite for eating with cheese and sausage or something like that.  They remind me of pie crust actually (taste not texture).  I found a better cracker for snacking on - so now I just use these for "bread crumbs" in recipes.  I know they sell GF bread crumbs that are already, well, crumbs, but I just haven't tried any of them yet.  I found something I like, so I'm afraid to switch!  Kids might like to eat these plain, they are thin and crunchy and they do taste great, just can't compare to a Ritz!  They also have other flavors like Veggie and Cheese, but I have not tried those.

10)  Schar pasta - is by far the best pasta I've found.  I love the spaghetti, the Tagliatelle (like egg noodles, just a little thinner) and the Fusilli (cork-screw) - and they are all gluten-free and dairy-free!  Just make sure your water is boiling before you add the pasta to the water and DO NOT over cook it.  Don't add any oil to the water, but I usually add a few pinches of kosher salt to flavor the pasta while it cooks.

11)  Organicville Organic Ketchup - I love this product because in addition to being gluten-free and dairy-free, it is organic and there isn't anything in it that you cannot pronounce!!  Also, no corn syrup or sugar added!  It's sweetened naturally with agave nectar - and it tastes great!  Ingredients:  Organic Tomato Puree, Organic Agave Nectar, Organic White Vinegar, Salt, Organic Onion Powder and Organic Spices.  Love it!

12)  SO Delicious Coconut Milk Yogurt - So I tried this yogurt today for the first time.  I tried the Strawberry.  It definitely had a different flavor.  At first I wasn't sure if I liked it or not.  I think if you are used to regular yogurt, it would take a little getting used to.  My favorite yogurt is the Yoplait Orchard Cherry, which is quite a bit sweeter than the So Delicious Strawberry, but it will work!  I added some of the Cherry Vanilla Almond Granola (#3 above) and a few frozen blueberries and it was awesome!  It left a little funny aftertaste in my mouth, but all in all, I think I can get used to it.  I am going to try using the vanilla in my fruit smoothies - I'm sure that will work perfectly!  I haven't tried the other flavors, like I said, but if you like yogurt and you have to be dairy-free - try this - it's a great replacement for cow's milk yogurt!!  Oh - an added bonus - no artificial colors, dairy-free, gluten-free AND soy-free!  Only 140 calories (50 from fat) in a container and it has 30% RDA-B12, 10% Vit.C, 8% Iron, 25% Calcium & 25% Magnesium, not too shabby!

13)  Farmland All Natural Uncured Bacon - Don't be afraid of the word "uncured"!  As long as you don't leave it out of the refrigerator, it won't hurt you!  I would be more afraid of words like Nitrate and Nitrite!  And this product has none of those!  It is all natural, no antibiotics or hormones, no artificial ingredients and it's minimally processed.  It's naturally hickory smoked and it's delicious!  We don't eat bacon often, because it is still, well, bacon (FAT), but when we do, this is my bacon of choice!

14)  Organicville Island Teriyaki Sauce & Marinade - I use this sauce mostly for marinating chicken breasts.  It's delicious and naturally sweetened with agave nectar.  It's gluten and dairy-free and you won't find anything on the ingredient list that you can't pronounce.  Oh - and maybe you guessed by the name, but it's all organic too!  I find it in the natural food aisle at Woodman's.

15)  Glutino Gluten Free Pretzel Sticks - I tried another brand of GF pretzel before trying this one and I will never try anything else!  These are awesome!  They taste like regular pretzels, you'd never know they are gluten-free and they also have the traditional pretzel shape in addition to the sticks.  They are gluten, milk, casein & egg free!  They are also great to use for a pretzel crust - yum!

16)  Spectrum Expeller Pressed Organic Virgin Coconut Oil - Wow, that is a mouthful!  I use the unrefined for medium heat to make my popcorn on the stove.  Pop your corn in it and then sprinkle with a little salt.  That is all you need and it will have a slight hint of coconut flavor, but not enough to turn off the non-coconut lover, in my opinion, but then I am on the opposite extreme there - I LOVE coconut!  And did you know that even though coconut oil is high in saturated fat, it's actually better for you than other oils?  In my opinion - this product and a little salt makes the best popcorn ever - and my family would agree!

17)  Daiya "Cheese" - So I tried this tonight for the first time.  We went to Raimondo's Pizza, my favorite pizza place.  They have a gluten free crust and they offered to put this cheese on for me if I brought it in, so I did!  It wasn't as good as mozzarella, of course, but it was doable!  The texture is a little different and to be honest, it doesn't look super appetizing, it has a yellowish color, but it was good!  I couldn't really tell that it wasn't actually cheese!  Also, this product contains no gluten, dairy or soy - bonus!  Give it a try if you are dairy-free!

18)  Kinnikinnick S'moreables Graham Style Crackers - These are awesome for eating, making S'mores and for graham cracker crusts!  I made a cheesecake a couple of weeks ago with a graham cracker crust using these crackers and it was incredible!  They are gluten, dairy and nut-free!

19)  Betty Crocker Gluten Free Brownie Mix - Awesome brownies and nobody will know they are gluten-free!  We love them for a quick dessert or to take to a potluck.  They are dairy-free as well!

20)  Betty Crocker Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix - Another great product by Betty!  Also dairy-free!!  The dough is a little crumbly, but it tastes great and the cookies are incredible, especially right out of the oven!  With day old cookies, stick them in the microwave for about 10-15 seconds and you will think they are fresh from the oven!  I make cookies and freeze them so they stay fresh longer and then you can just take out a couple when you have a craving!

21)  Pamela's Sugar Cookie Mix - Awesome for cut-out sugar cookies!  Super easy to make - just add a stick of butter and one egg!  Gluten and dairy-free.  Dough is super easy to work with and HOLY COW are they delicious!!  You've definitely gotta try these!

22)  Chocolate Dream Baking Chips - These chocolate chips are dairy and gluten-free and they taste just like regular chocolate chips.  They do contain soy.

23)  Wellaby's Pita Chips - Gluten-free (but they do contain dairy), light, crispy and so yummy for dipping into your favorite dip or hummus!  Available in a variety of flavors!

24)  Diana's Bananas Banana Babies - Gluten and dairy-free frozen dark chocolate covered bananas!!  These are my "go to" sweet snack when I have a craving!  They are only 130 calories, 60 from fat.  They contain no artificial flavors, preservatives, colors or trans fats and best of all, they are delicious!!  They also have a milk chocolate variety and one with nuts, but those are not dairy-free.

25)  Udi's Three Cheese Pizza - I prefer to make home made gluten-free pizza, but when I need a quick dinner that my kids won't complain about, this pizza is perfect!  They are small though, so you might have to make a couple to feed your family, but they are delicious!  The crust is thin, crispy and gluten-free, but you'd never know it!

26)  Breton Herb and Garlic Crackers - They have different flavors, but I like this one the best.  They taste the closest to a gluten cracker as I have tasted yet!  They are great for snacking all by themselves or even better with a nice slice of cheese!

27)  King Arthur Chocolate Cake Mix - This is THE BEST out there!!!  It's so good that when I first tried a cupcake made with this mix at a potluck, I took one bite and threw the rest out!  I was sure that someone had made a mistake and they weren't actually gluten free!  Good news, they are, and they are better than any cake I've tried!  I would highly recommend any King Arthur product!

28)  King Arthur Muffin Mix - AMAZING!!!  Use it for any kind of muffins, but I like to make blueberry and add a little sugar in the raw on top!  You'll NEVER suspect they are gluten free, they are THAT good!!

29)
